Dr. Deirdre Black from the High Energy Physics group at the Cavendish Laboratory and Mr Alastair Davies, teacher of science at the Netherhall School in Cambridge have been awarded a Royal Society partnership grant for a project called "Smashing Particles! - Let's Celebrate the LHC". The project is in collaboration with Dr. Cristina Lazzeroni of the University of Birmingham and the Yardleys School in Birmingham. The total amount of the grant is £3000. In a weekly after-school club running from January to May 2008 pupils aged 15-18 will carry out hands-on investigations of particle tracks in cloud chambers, measure the charge-to-mass ratio of the electron in a Thomson tube and produce a circular electron beam. They will also research the historical development of these ideas as well as learn about modern particle physics and the Large Hadron Collider. The two schools will meet to present and compare their results by videoconference. The groups will meet in person and interact with particle physics researchers at their own scientific conference at the University of Birmingham and also during a particle physics exploration day at the Cavendish Laboratory. The pupils at the Netherhall School will also run a public engagement program, with additional funding from the Institute of Physics, about the project and about the LHC. This program will include a website and press releases, as well as a stand at the Cavendish Science Week open day on March 16th organised in conjunction with a large exhibit about particle physics and the LHC by the Cambridge High Energy Physics group. More information is available at Smashing Particles

Cambridge University Eco Racing 7th to 15th June 2008
Cambridge University Eco Racing Team are taking their Solar Buggy Workshop nationwide! The team of Science and Engineering Ambassadors are touring the UK from Land's End to John O'Groats in what will be UK's first road legal solar car and they are making Outreach a major element of the tour. The team are running workshops in schools and also displaying the full-size solar car in open spaces accessible to the public so they can ask the team questions about the car and environmental issues.

The tour will begin on 7th June and end on 15th June in line with the following schedule

The Ambassadors participating in this wonderful venture are Martin McBrien, Rob Bain, Chris Uglow, Jingdong Chen, Charlie Watt, Charlie, Hannah McMillan, Julian Johnson, Jia-Yan Gu, Anthony Law, Alisdair McClymont and Maria Guirguis

The Learning Grid - Rockingham Festival 2008
Rockingham Festival is the Learning Grid’s annual three day celebration of science, maths and engineering - 1st to 3rd July 2008. Now in its second year, Rockingham Festival gives young people from 8 to 16 the chance to try hands-on activities and be inspired by real-life opportunities in science and engineering. Teachers are invited to bring a class or a whole year group for a day out that combines learning and entertaining through a variety of workshops, shows and race events. In 2007, over 2,100 pupils and 241 teachers from 54 schools across the UK came to the Festival. 97% of teachers agreed that the activities offered curriculum enrichment opportunities that were relevant to their pupils and 92% said they would like to get their school involved next year.
