Adjusting to a hearing aid
Adjusting to a hearing aid
Adjusting to a hearing aid can be a gradual process as it involve
s listening to a variety of environments as well as becoming to hearing different sounds.
So what is a hearing aid exactly? A hearing aid is an electronic, battery-operated device that amplifies and changes sound to allow for improved communication. hearing aids receive sound through a microphone which then converts the sound waves to electrical signals. The amplifier increases the loudness of the signals which then sends the sound through the speaker.
When your adjusting to your new hearing aid, make sure you know that;
• Hearing aids will not restore your hearing back to normal; it simply delivers louder sound to your ear. Your ear will still have to convert the sound to electrical impulses which are then sent to your brain. Your brain then uses this information and processes it. You may get frustrated with words that are not clear but be patient and let your brain adjust to the new information. It will improve.
• You may find that your voice sounds odd when you first put on the hearing aid. Your audiologist can adjust this for you to make your voice sound more natural.
• You will be able to feel the hearing aid in your ear at first, but after a while the feeling disappears overtime.
• If you have gotten used to the lack of hearing you may find a hearing aid a shocking experience with the sound feeling confusing to you. Identifying individual sounds may be different.
• It takes time to learn how to use a hearing aid. Don’t rush it and don’t compare yourself to others.
• Many people become nervous or tired when they first try a hearing aid. It is okay to turn off the hearing aid and rest a while. Adjust the hearing aid slowly until you are comfortable with it.
